The problem of wire rope sling deformation

   Wire rope slings are commonly used lifting equipment, widely employed in industries such as shipping, construction, power, and wind power. The advantages of wire rope slings become more apparent in lifting and hoisting operations. However, after prolonged use, equipment can develop various issues due to wear and tear, damage, and other reasons. Below, we will discuss the problem of deformation in wire rope slings.

   1.External Trauma: During operation, abnormal contact between wire rope slings and other equipment can easily cause external trauma. The most obvious trauma occurs when wire rope slings slide in pulleys or jump out of guides on drums, often resulting in localized crushing and rendering tens to hundreds of meters of wire rope unusable.

   2.Crush: Wire rope slings are prone to crushing when wound irregularly on drums. When wire rope slings are wound irregularly on drums, they tend to crush and emit a "creaking" sound during operation. Damage caused by crushing results in rapid appearance of broken wires and flattened areas.

   3.Twisting: Permanent deformation caused by local twisting of wire rope slings is called wire rope twisting. Twisting in the same direction as the lay of the wire rope is called positive twisting, while twisting in the opposite direction is called negative twisting. Ordinary wire ropes have a tendency to rotate; if the ends of the strands are not secured when tension is applied, the strands will rotate in the opposite direction, which is an inherent factor causing wire rope twisting. Tests have shown that the strength of wire rope significantly decreases after twisting damage. The strength of positively twisted wire ropes is only 60% to 80% of the original strength, while negatively twisted wire ropes have a strength of less than 50% of the original strength.

   Wire rope slings should be immediately withdrawn from service if deformation occurs, and new wire ropes should be replaced to prevent accidents during operations.
